Top BI Trends: Our Take

There are many factors that will shape the business intelligence (BI) industry in the coming years. With this exciting time ahead, Gartner has made predictions as to what they believe are the top 6 trends to look forward to in 2012 and beyond. Here's how we think these trends will impact your business.

1. BI in the Cloud

There is no doubt Cloud will continue to grow and help organizations reduce costs. Before migrating, it is important for organizations to make sure they have a clear strategy and determine whether public cloud, private cloud, or a hybrid is the best fit for the organization's needs.

2. Mobile BI

Mobile solutions allow information to be readily available at all times and BI will be no exception. Customers and employee expectations will drive Mobile BI to mainstream.

Microsoft BI on SharePoint 2010 enables organizations provide mobile solutions to users. PerformancePoint, Reporting Services and PowerPivot/Excel Service are currently available via any smart phone. In addition, Microsoft actively promotes interaction with executive scorecards, Bing Maps visualizations and complex Excel reports on your iPad or Kindle Fire.

3. Analytics

Once you have a solid data platform, what you do with it will be the determining factor in setting yourself apart from your competition. Analysis from optimization, visual presentation of complex data, and mining of social media can provide clear action steps to help achieve business objectives.

4. In-Memory Analytics

For fast queries and rapid discovery of data, it is better to utilize the memory of modern hardware. We suggest not storing data to a disk, as those are often too slow.

Microsoft's PowerPivot and Analysis Services Tabular are the answers for In-memory needs. These products consolidate data from multiple sources and run canned or ad hoc reports at blazing fast speeds.

5. Agile Development

Agile development is becoming more popular in BI development. It has shown to reduce project duration, decrease project costs and lead to better solutions. It will gather requirements at the right time and slice across the project plan to bring solutions to the business faster.

6. Big Data

As Big Data becomes more widely adopted, it will be a larger part of the BI landscape. If you already have Big Data, you can leverage Microsoft BI to report on your Hadoop data with the Microsoft BI Hive Driver. You can also pull data into PowerPivot and leverage its in-memory capabilities for fast queries and analytics.
